NAV-DURGA a Photo Series

The Nav-Durga project and series has been a beautiful journey for me as an artist, as a devotee, as a woman & as a human being.

The research ahead of this series made me realise the depth of the concept of Nav-Durga & how it can be compared to the life, the journey, the trails and tribulations of any individual, be it a woman or a man.

The power, the “Shakti” of Maa Durga, is not restricted or limited to the domain of any particular sex, religion or creed. It is rather universal.

Though, that power, that shakti, can only be aroused by those who are ready to embrace and acknowledge it from within, the choice and willingness to search and receive it, depends on an individual's capacity.

For the nine nights of Navratri that Maa Durga fought, each night she defeated one demon, Kama(lust), Krodha(anger), Moha(attraction), Lobha (greed), Mada (pride), Matsara(Jealousy), Swartha(selfishness), Anyaya(injustice) and Amanvayata(cruelty).

Likewise, it is for us to fight the devils both inside out if we want to find true meaning and do justice to our human birth...

As for respecting woman because the Goddess was a woman... I would say, hold respect, compassion & love for all beings irrespective of sex, religion or species!

I want to thank and send out ton loads of love to each one of the nine Devis who got featured in this series.

Trina, Udita, Varsha, Mrinalini, Ritushri, Sudhana, Meghlayana, Bhavini and Alaknanda...

I want to thank Ashish, Meghlayana and Vatsala for all the technical and moral support. Without their support, I couldn't have done this!

And last but not the least, I want to thank each and everyone who extended their love to this project...shared and bestowed it with such loving comments on my Instagram and Facebook handles!

SHAILAPUTRI

The FIRST form of Navdurga is SHAILAPUTRI.

She is the daughter of the King of Mountains (Himalayas). In Sanskrit mountain is referred to as “Shail” and Putri means daughter, thus she is named “Shailputri”.

Maa Shailputri, is the absolute embodiment of Mother Nature, as Prakriti, she looks after all living organisms including human beings, animals, trees, shrubs, plants and even tiny living things on Earth.

She is the Goddess of Muladhara Chakra also known as Root Chakra who, upon awakening, begins Her journey upwards to spiritual awakening.

Goddess Shailaputri, symbolises the power of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. She has within her the embodiment of all the Gods. In one word, she is the world.

 | BRAHMACHARINI |

The SECOND form of Navdurga is BRAHMACHARINI.

Brahmacharini means a devoted female student who lives in an Ashrama with her Guru along with other students. It is also the name of the second aspect of the goddess Durga.

In spite of being a Goddess, she cannot escape learning and has to go through the life of a pupil under the watchful eyes of a Guru.

Brahmacharini signifies bachelorhood and purity.

This stage of hers, symbolises spirituality and her search for knowledge and finally attaining "Shiva" the ultimate truth!

With an unslakable desire to make her dream come true, and undying love for SHIVA, Goddess Brahmacharini is the one with confidence, competence and courage. The true descendants of Goddess Brahmacharini are the ones whose stories chronicle a tale of hardships, devotion & dedication.

CHANDRAGHANTA

The THIRD form of Navdurga is CHANDRAGHANTA.

Goddess Mahagauri married to Lord Shiva is goddess who started applying half chandra on her forehead because of which She is referred to as Chandraghanta.

Chandra is moon that is related to mind. That aspect of the divine that charms the mind, the embodiment of such eternal beauty is Chandraghanta.

According to Shiva Maha Purana, Chandraghanta is the “Shakti”, of Lord Shiva in the form of Chandrashekhara, each aspect of Shiva is accompanied by shakti, therefore they are Ardhanarishvara.

Shiva sees Chandraghanta's form as a great example of beauty, charm, grace and power.

Wherever something appears beautiful to you, know it is the energy of mother divine.

KUSHMANDA

The FORTH form of Navdurga is KUSHMANDA.

She is said to have created the universe with her radiant smile. Ku refers to “a little” and Ushma refers to “energy or warmth” and Anda refers to “cosmic egg”. She has the power to live inside the sun, to empower the sun to radiate energy and effulgence to the universe.

It is believed that when the universe did not exist and there was literally nothing but complete darkness everywhere, a ray of divine light appeared. It soon started to take shape and too the form of a lady. The divine lady, the first being of the universe was called Maa Kushmanda. She smiled and darkness was eliminated. She created the Sun, the planets, the stars and the galaxies and took the seat at the centre of the Sun.

This form of divinity signifies a ball of life energy or prana. Whenever you feel you are full of prana, know that it is an aspect of mother divine.

SKANDAMATA

The FIFTH form of Navdurga is SKANDAMATA.

She is the motherly incarnation of Goddess Durga.

She is the motherly energy. She is also the mother of all the six systems of knowledge- nyaya, yog, sankhya, vaisheshika,  vedanta & uttar mimamsa. These are the six bodies of knowledge, which includes the study of music, astrology, and many other disciplines, the meters, phonetics, among sixty-four different disciplines of art and science. Skandmata is the mother of all this wisdom.

SKANDAMATA

KATYAYANI

The SIXTH form of Navdurga is KATYAYANI.

Believed to be the destroyer of all evil, she is seen as a warrior goddess who was able to bring peace to the world.

Maa Katyayani is also known as Mahishasurmardini (Killer of Mahishasura), as she was able to defeat and kill the evil demon Mahishasura.

She is that which is born out of the seer aspect of consciousness. Katyayan is the witness aspect. When you say, ‘I am not the body or the mind’ and go deep within, becoming the seer of everything, then from that seer aspect of consciousness, energy rises which has intuitive abilities. This aspect is seeing beyond the senses, knowing beyond the logic and that energy is Katyayani.

KATYAYANI

KALARATRI

The SEVENTH form of Navdurga is KALARATRI.

Where there is no injustice that goes unpunished and no forgiveness granted to the malicious.

When no other forces work, she comes to being to destroy the sinful.

Kalratri can be related to the crown chakra (the Sahasrara chakra). She bestows the believer with siddhis and niddhis, specifically information, energy and wealth.

Also known as the Shubankari, which implies auspicious in Sanskrit, it’s stated that she provides auspicious and optimistic results making one fearless.

She embodies deep dark energy, the dark matter that houses an infinite universe that brings solace to every soul.

KALARATRI

MAHAGAURI

The EIGHTH form of Navdurga is MAHAGAURI.

The word Maha means great and the word Gauri means radiant hence the name Mahagauri.

She is that beautiful energy of the mother divine which is knowledge and ultimate liberation.

She represents purity, energy and brilliance.

Goddess Mahagauri, the consort of Lord Shiva is the homemaker. After all the trials of tribulations of life she finally settles down.

In that sense, Devi Mahagauri lives in every family.

MAHAGAURI

SIDDHIDATRI

Ending this series on Navdurga with a single frame, one frame that encompasses the NINTH form of Navdurga, SIDDHIDATRI.

After vanquishing all forms of demons both inside and out, she finally sits in the lotus position in complete peace and tranquility.

Siddhidatri, she is all pervasive, omnipresent and is the accomplished one.

Seeing out of the box, thinking out of the box, going beyond the reasonable, logical mind, knowing something much farther and wider is the attribute of Siddhidatri.

If you are someone, engaged in selling your products online through digital mediums and e-commerce portals, you need to know, that in the absence of real interaction, photos of visually appealing products on-screen increases the chances of a sale, as the look of the products on the sites/portals is vital to draw the attention of the buyer.

You need to assure, that the visual appeal of your product, the detailing is closest to the real feel and look of the actual product.

Marketers would tell you about the 3-second rule, where the image must grab the consumer's attention in 3 seconds to engage them to become potential customers.

And this information, becomes crucial, especially because your customers are not going to come in direct contact with the product you are selling and in all probability will be making their selection based on photographs they see on digital mediums and your e-commerce portals.

The role of experienced photographers, good product photography, and a good post-production team, thus becomes very important.

As they are the ones who would be responsible for creating imagery of the products and present the merchandise in the most appealing way for your customers/buyers.

Professional Product Photographer can bring out the minutest detail of your product and also take care of the design aesthetics.

Only with the help of an expert team, who knows how to do the Clipping Path properly, you can grow your online business beyond your imagination especially if you are into selling stand-alone products like apparel, jewellery, home products, etc.

A properly clipped image focuses attention.
Clipped photos cuts the clutter and draws attention

So, those of you in the business of selling any kind of product online, and who have been compromising on your product placement could be making a huge mistake if you are still depending on your cell phone photography skills and might be missing out on prospective customers and increase of sales.

It is advisable, that you should create a budget and hire a decent Product Photography team to do the job for you in a professional way.

Rest assured... you would see a rise in the sales of your products!

Conclusion

*    When selling online, how you present your products to the buyer becomes crucial and it has to be made sure your products look visually appealing and attractive.

*    Professional and accurate displaying of images help in building customer trust in your brand and eventually drives more sales but also assures next to no chances of return.

A short trip to the land of Royalty... :)

While going through some travel photographs of Rajasthan, of a photographer friend, the images of the royalty clouded my vision, and then my mind, taking cue from those visions went into a whirlwind of scenes trying to imagine how would the royals spend an introspective evening, sitting on the parapet of their fort while the sun set?

And the mind said, the only way to satisfy, to try and come wee bit close, to what that experience might have been, would be, to take a short trip to Rajasthan.
As this trip was just out of a whim, wanted to go to a place closest to Delhi and thus zeroed down a short stay at Neemrana’s Kesroli, Hill Fort in Alwar district of Rajasthan.
It was an easy choice as it is only 174 km from Delhi. And takes about 3 and a half hours by road.
The 14th century Hill Fort-Kesroli is one of the oldest heritage hotel sites in India. It is believed, to have been built by the Yaduvanshi Rajputs, who claim descent from Lord Krishna, but converted, to Islam in the mid-fourteenth century to be called Khanzadas.
The Kesroli, Hill Fort offers a unique experience of seeing and ‘living’ history, added to that, the fact that nothing about the Neemrana experiences is ever ordinary.
Situated at a height of 200 feet, one is among the majestic splendour of 700-year-old walls, enjoying the changing views of the mustard, millet and wheat fields below surrounding the fort.
Kesroli has both large and small rooms. The dual rooms are ideal for families with children as they offer them the excitement of a fort-destination/stay.
The restaurant here, serves quite extensive buffet meals and the food served is delectable. As I am not a very good eater, on special request the restaurant manager was gracious enough to serve a la carte, though I was not provided with a separate menu but had to choose from the lay of the buffet for the day, but that seemed to be absolutely fair!
A beautiful pool adds to the luxurious comfort of the fort and for sure gives it’s guest a cooling experience specially in the summer months after day visits to the neighbouring palaces, museums, natural sites and sanctuaries of Alwar and Sariska.
We could only visit, the Moosi Maharani Ki Chhatri and the Alwar’s City Palace along with the museum situated inside the Palace, during our stay in Alwar.

The city palace is located in the same building of Vinay Villas palace, it looks like a run down palace from the outside as various government offices and court are located inside the palace. But as soon as you enter the museum through various dark passages, the palace gets transformed.
The museum is pretty well managed. You can see many artefacts, dresses and jewellery of the Royalties, many manuscripts, paintings, statues and weapons from the by gone eras.

It is sad though, that, the rest of the Palace lays in shamble, our guide showed us the completely broken down part of the Palace, I wish that part of the Palace is soon restored so that visitors can enjoy seeing it’s past glory!
Our visit to Moosi Maharani Ki Chhatri, was also a let down from the point of view of the upkeep of the place and it’s surrounding area. Though the structure in it self was quite majestic. Even the general crowd was quite disturbing. If you choose to visit these places in Alwar, be advised to avoid western clothing!

We stayed at The Kesroli, Hill Fort, for two nights and three days and added a day in Jaipur with a night stay. This was added to the itinerary solely for shopping purpose!
A visit to Rajasthan, that too going so close to Jaipur and not visiting Bapu Bazar would be absolutely criminal! :)
Among other things and interests, Jaipur sure can be called a shopper’s paradise!
We also visited the City Fort in Jaipur during our short one day stay.

As a culmination can surely say, that, stay at The Kesroli Hill Fort was absolutely fabulous. The whole reason why this trip was planned was totally made justified by their hospitality and proper care of guests.
Will surely visit them again.

Travel Tips:
1. For Alwar city visit, women avoid western clothing. Carry a scarf or dupatta even if you are dressed in t-shirt and jeans!

2. In Jaipur, Bani Park, Hathroi Fort area and anything on or off M I Road between Ajmeri Gate & Khasa Kothi crossings one can find good decent places to stay.
Be careful of shoddy places in and around the older part of Jaipur.

3. We have learned through experience that booking rooms with Neemrana properties always works better directly through their office.
